ExperienceI offer one-on-one Italian lessons for all levels of Italian.
As a native Italian speaker, I am able to help those aiming at improving their conversational skills. At the same time, as a PhD student I also bring the academic skills necessary for university and college level Italian.
I have experience teaching both beginners and advanced students. While in Italy, I specialized in teaching advanced students who want to improve their reading, speaking, and writing skills, as well as gain a broader knowledge of Italy and its culture.
My knowledge of the finer points of the Italian language is profound and I really enjoy sharing my skills.
I also offer one-on-one lessons of writing (in English). At Cornell, I have taught various First-Year Writing Seminars and my students have won different university prizes and awards for their papers. I focus on the skills required to write in a clear, organized, and persuasive way. Depending on your goals, we can focus on improving your grammar, word-choice, writing at the sentence level, or ability to write coherent and cogent paragraphs.

Andrea is experienced, courteous, and professional – but most importantly – highly perceptive. After just a couple of sessions, I felt like he had already picked up on my learning style as well as the types of question I tend to ask. As a result, the lesson is always effective and enjoyable. Aside from verb conjugation, vocabulary and other memorizable details, every student must be able to discern the different shades of meaning, and recognize any usage discrepancies between their native language and the language they wish to learn (for example, the word for “if” in Italian does not always imply uncertainty and should be translated into English as “that” in some contexts). Andrea’s exceptional understanding of grammatical subtleties allows him to be particularly helpful in these regards. He takes care to point out to me any possibilities for confusion, and has clearned up a number of misconceptions I wasn’t aware I had. Anyone can go through the motions of teaching a language - perhaps after memorizing pedagogical manuals and putting them to practice for a few years – but Andrea’s talents are rare even among the most experienced. I have complete confidence in him as a teacher, and would not hesitate to recommend him.
